SEATTLE - A pair of spirited comebacks kept things interesting, but in the end, Saint Martin's offense proved to be too explosive as the Chico State men's basketball team dropped an 86-69 decision to the Saints to wrap up Seattle University's Elgin Baylor Tip-off Classic Sunday.
The Wildcats used a 22-12 run to cut a 21-point deficit to 11 seven minutes into the second half. After Saint Martin's stretched the lead back to 16, the Wildcats cut it back to nine at 75-66 with 4:33 remaining. They could get no closer, however, and finished the weekend 0-2. Saint Martin's improved to 3-3.
Junior Russell and Chris Sharp scored 13 points apiece to lead Chico State. Andy Bocian, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, finished with 10 points. LaCurtis Sumlin III played well off the bench, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Sharp, Bocian, Russell, Sumlin, Josh Jackson, and Roderick Hawkins tied for team-high honors with four rebounds. Justin Argenal finished with seven points and three steals.
The Wildcats will be back in the Pacific Northwest for the Western Oregon Tournament next weekend.
