CHICO, Calif. – Rod Hawkins’ diving steal gave the Chico State men’s basketball team a chance to win, but Hawkins and Jesse Soto each missed long jump shots in the final six seconds as San Francisco State held on for a 67-66 win against the Wildcats at Acker Gym Saturday night.
Will Logan’s 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining gave San Francisco State (8-3, 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) a 67-64 advantage. Darroll Phillips, who led all scorers with 20 points, drew the Wildcats within one with a pair of free throws with 31 seconds to play. Hawkins then dove to tip Logan’s inbounds pass off a San Francisco State player and give the Wildcats a chance to win. Hawkins missed a well defended 3-pointer with six seconds left, however. Soto corralled the loose ball rebound for one last chance, but his off-balance shot from the corner came off the iron short.
The loss was the first of the season at home for Chico State, which fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA. Chico State outrebounded San Francisco State 37-33, but shot 41 percent to San Francisco State’s 50 percent.
Frank Igbekoyi joined Phillips in double-figures with 11 points and Mike Martin tacked on nine. Hawkins and Shane Bradley pulled down seven rebounds apiece to lead the Wildcats.
Alex Thomas paced San Francisco State with 13 points, while Chris Rodriguez and Phoenix O’Rourke finished with 12 points apiece. Robert Hayes scored 11 points in just 14 minutes before fouling out.
San Francisco State took a 35-27 lead into halftime after seeing the lead change hands seven times in the opening 20 minutes. Rodriguez’s old-fashioned 3-point play and Darryl Robinson’s layup in the opening seconds of the second half gave the Gators their biggest lead of the night, 40-29.
The Wildcats responded with a 27-8 run capped by Josh Jackson’s 3-pointer to take control 56-48 with 9:05 to play. That control didn’t last however, as San Francisco State scored the next eight points to tie the game, and no team led by more than three points after that.
Chico State is back home next weekend when it hosts Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next Friday and Saturday.
