CHICO, Calif. – True freshman Natasha Smith scored a season-high 25 points to lead the 22nd-ranked Chico State women's basketball team to an 81-55 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Friday in Acker Gym.
Smith was starting for just the second time but looked like a veteran, knocking down 10-of-15 shots, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while nabbing four rebounds and three steals. Audriana Spencer chipped in 14 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Jade Smith-Williams added 13 points, while Melissa Richardson tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists as Chico State improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA. Ja'Nee Westmorland led the Otters with 15 points, Alma Lopez netted 14, and Dana Andrews scored 10.
Chico State dominated the glass, outrebounding Cal State Monterey Bay 34-21 and garnering 19 second-chance points. They also forced the Otters into 25 turnovers and scored 30 points off those turnovers.
Chico State has now won seven straight home games and 35 of its last 36 in Acker Gym. The Wildcats host Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night at 5:30.
