CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State men's basketball team used the drive and the post pass to perfection, scoring 54 points in the paint en route to an 83-71 victory against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night at Acker Gym.
Mike Martin led the Wildcats with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play before fouling out. He did make a trio of 3-pointers. But Justin Argenal scored 11 of his 14 points in the lane or at the free throw line, Darroll Phillips scored all 12 of his points in the paint, Josh Jackson scored all 12 of his points in the lane as well, and center Shane Bradley posted up for 11 points.
By dominating the glass to the tune of 45-30, the Wildcats also earned a 15-11 edge in second chance points to help them improve to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA despite Juston Willis' game-high 18 points.
The lead changed hands 10 time in the first half and the Otters went to intermission with a 42-41 lead. Jackson's back-to-back layups gave the Wildcats the lead for good, 49-46, with 16:17 to play.
The Otters cut it back to one before Phillips scored consecutive buckets and then Bradley scored three straight times down the court. Suddenly, Chico State's lead was 60-50. Monterey Bay whittled it down to 66-64 with just over five minutes to play, but the Wildcats answered with a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to put the game away. Jesse Soto had a bucket, two assists, and a blocked shot to spark the rally.
Chico State, which is now 4-0 at home this season, hopes to keep that streak alive against San Francisco State Saturday at 7:30.
