LOS ANGELES – One bit of good news for Chico State’s men’s basketball players is that, with a rare Thursday night home game scheduled this week, they won’t have to wait as long to get the bitter taste left over from this weekend off their tongues. Some more good news is that a team that is struggling as much as they are – Cal State Stanislaus – will be their opponent.
The not-so-good news is that the Wildcats endured another trying loss Saturday night as Cal State L.A. handed them their most lopsided loss of the season, 82-51. It was the seventh loss in a row for Chico State, which has not won since Jan. 5. The Wildcats are now 5-12 overall and 1-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Chico State is in last place in the CCAA, but can make Cal State Stanislaus join them with a win Thursday night. The Warriors have lost six games in a row and are 0-10 away from home this season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Cal State L.A. improved to 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA with its win Saturday. The Golden Eagles got a monstrous performance from forward Christopher Mark who finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds, and three steals. Vincent Camper scored 22 points and dished out eight assists.
Mike Martin and Darroll Phillips led Chico State with 10 points each. Justin Argenal led the team with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Martin made his first two free throws of the night to improve to 26-for-26 on the season before missing two free throws with 10:06 to play. He finished the evening 6-of-8 from the line.
Chico State jumped out to a 7-4 lead thanks to five quick points from Phillips, but things quickly went south for the Wildcats. Cal State L.A. scored the next 12 points of the game to take a 16-7 lead. Ryan Smith’s jumper stemmed the tide for a bit, and the Golden Eagles went to the locker room up 34-22.
A 17-1 run to start the second half did the Wildcats in, though. They had five missed shots and four turnovers before Frank Igbekoyi’s free throw with 14:44 remaining. The Wildcats then missed two more shots and committed another turnover as the Golden Eagles built their lead to 51-23. Cal State L.A. led by at least 24 points from that moment on.
