CARSON, Calif. – The revenge was sweet and the result of that revenge even sweeter for the Chico State women’s basketball team Friday night. The Wildcats avenged last season’s humbling loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 70-50 victory over the Toros. That win, coupled with Cal State San Bernardino’s 70-57 win against Sonoma State, leaves all three teams tied atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings at 7-2.
Chico State, ranked No. 21 in the nation, improved to 14-4 overall. Audriana Spencer led the Wildcats with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Her long 3-pointer to beat the buzzer at the end of the first half was the 169th of her career, tying her with former teammate Michelle Pietka for second on Chico State’s career list. Natasha Smith finished with 13 points, Melissa Richardson had nine, and point guard Jade Smith-Williams scored eight points, dished out five assists, and had only one turnover in 31 minutes of action.
Cal State Dominguez Hills fell to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA. The Toros, picked by CCAA coaches to win the conference title before the season, have now lost five of their last seven games.
Cal State Dominguez Hills crushed Chico State 73-54 last season in Carson, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season. But Friday night, Chico State ended any thoughts of a repeat performance with a 9-2 run to start the game. The Toros tied the game up at 16-16, but the Wildcats finished the first half on an 8-0 run, capped by Spencer’s buzzer-beating, 25-foot, fall-away 3-pointer to take a 34-20 lead into halftime.
The Toros never got closer than 12 in the second half as Chico State’s relentless defense, which had forced them into 15 first-half turnovers, pressured them into 11 more in the second half. Chico State finished the game with a 34-15 edge in points off turnovers, a 32-12 edge in points in the paint, and a 12-0 edge in fast break points.
Chico State also shot 49 percent (24-49) on the night to improve to 32-0 when shooting a higher field goal percentage than it’s opponent and 18-0 when shooting 45-percent or better under second-year head coach Molly Goodenbour’s watch.
The Wildcats, who lost at Sonoma State last Saturday, have now won the game following a loss on 15 of the last 16 occasions. Eight of those 15 wins have come by 20 points or more.
Chico State is back in action Saturday night when it travels to face Cal State L.A. at 5:30. The Wildcats return home Thursday, Jan. 31 to face Cal State Stanislaus.
