CARSON, Calif – How does the Chico State men’s basketball team spell frustration? These days it’s C-C-A-A. The Wildcats dropped their sixth straight California Collegiate Athletic Association game, the 10th of their last 11 conference games overall, and the 14th of their last 15 on the road with an 88-65 defeat at the hands of host Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night. The Wildcats committed 30 turnovers that led to 44 Cal State Dominguez Hills points and shot just 9-for-31 from 3-point range.
Darroll Phillips was the lone bright spot for Chico, knocking down all 10 of his free throw attempts and finishing with a team-high 19 points. Phillips, who entered the game ranked 13th in the nation in free throw shooting percentage, upped that mark from 91 percent to 93 percent (52-for-56) on the evening.
Chico State fell to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in the CCAA with the loss, their fourth straight against Dominguez Hills. True freshman Rod Hawkins finished with 10 points, while fellow true freshman Josh Jackson notched eight points and three steals.
Point guard Justin Argenal finished with seven points, six assists, four rebounds, and a pair of steals. Argenal’s final assist of the night, a kick-out to Hawkins for a 3-pointer, was the 400th of career. He and Deon Robinson (1997-2001) are the only two players in Chico State men’s basketball history to reach that echelon.
Rodney Yearby led Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-6, 4-5 CCAA) with 20 points and also pulled down eight rebounds. Jerrell Smith finished with 17 points and a game-high nine boards.
Chico State led 10-7 early in the game sparked by Mike Martin’s four quick points and 3-pointers from Phillips and Hawkins. But the rest of the half belonged to the hosts as they outscored the Wildcats 36-14 over the final 16 minutes before intermission and took a 43-24 lead into the locker room.
The lead hovered around 20 in the early minutes of the second half before the Wildcats scored eight straight points in just one minute and 24 seconds to trim the deficit to 53-41 with 12:49 to play. Then, with 11:03 left, Phillips netted a 3-pointer to close the gap to 57-48. But that was as close as the Wildcats would get.
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the game’s next 19 points to take control 76-48 with 5:29 remaining and secure the victory.
Chico State will wrap up its current four-game road trip with a game at Cal State L.A. Saturday at 7:30. The Wildcats return home to face Cal State Stanislaus Thursday night.
