ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Down by three, Chico State's Audriana Spencer connected on a long shot from the arc at the buzzer, but her foot was just over the three-point line, resulting in a two-point basket and a 47-46 loss to Sonoma State. The game was a battle for sole possession of first place in the CCAA and lived up to the billing.
The No. 16 Wildcats, who had a five-game winning steak over Sonoma State snapped, drop to 13-4 overall, 6-2 in CCAA play. The Seawolves now sit alone atop the CCAA standings at 7-1, 13-2 overall.
After a back and forth first ten minutes, Chico State used a 7-0 run midway through the first half to take a 17-11 lead. Sonoma cut in to the lead, but still trailed at the break, 24-21. (Another record snapped in the game was the Wildcats’ impressive 64-game winning streak when leading at the half.)
Chico held the lead for the first eleven and a half minutes of the second half before SSU took the lead back with 8:26 remaining in the game.
The score went back and forth with Chico building a four-point lead, 44-40, with 4:27 remaining. But Sonoma hit a three pointer and a jumper on its next two possessions to take the lead for good at the 2:08 mark.
Neither team scored for the next minute and a half until Sonoma’s Chelsey Armacost hit a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left that ended up being the difference in the game.
Both teams subbed sparingly, using just seven players each. Audriana Spencer led the Wildcats with 16 points. Natasha Smith and Jade Smith-Williams had eight apiece and Smith-Williams recorded five assists. Spencer and Cory Edwards each had five rebounds to lead the ‘Cats.
Sonoma’s Genny Anderson finished with 18 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Armacost finished with 12 points.
The Wildcats continue on the road next weekend with games at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
