ROHNERT PARK, Calif.- Sonoma State used a solid second half to beat Chico State 66-51 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Seawolf Gym on Saturday night. The Wildcats, who have now lost five straight, fall to 5-10, 1-7 in CCAA play, while the Seawolves improve to 8-6, 4-4 CCAA.
Neither team was able to take firm control in a first half, but the Wildcats battled from six points down to take a one-point lead, 30-29, into the locker room at the break. Mike Martin came up big for Chico, scoring 11 of his team-high 17 points in the first half.
The second half was a different story. The Seawolves hit the first basket 15 seconds in to take back the lead and never trailed after that, building to a ten-point lead with 11 minutes remaining. Chico was able to cut the lead down to five with 6:34 left, but another 6-0 run by the Seawolves put them comfortably ahead.
For the second straight night, Martin led the Wildcats with 17 points and six rebounds in 30 minutes of play. Darroll Phillips was the only other Wildcat in double digits with 10. Justin Argenal finished with six points, five assists, and two steals. Rod Hawkins recorded seven points and Josh Jackson led all players with three steals.
The Seawolves were led by Ben Washington's 18 points and three assists. Jay Flores and Keith Gardner both came off the bench to score 12 points each. Gardner led SSU with eight rebounds.
The Wildcats continue on the road next weekend with games at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
