Wildcats stymie Lumberjacks in first half

ARCATA, Calif. - For the second straight game, the Chico State women’s basketball team gave its opponent fits in the first half and cruised to a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. The Wildcats held Humboldt State to just nine points and forced 18 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play en route to a 59-37 win.

The nine points were the fewest allowed by a Chico State team in a half in almost 17 years. The Wildcats held Notre Dame de Namur to four points in the second half of a 93-20 win in 1991.

Chico State (13-3, 6-1) has now won six straight and will battle Sonoma State (12-2, 6-1), winner over Cal State Stanislaus tonight, 59-44, in a battle for first place tomorrow night in Rohnert Park. Humboldt State fell to 7-7 overall, 3-4 in CCAA play with the loss.

Jade Smith-Williams, who scored 18 points in the game to tie her career best, could have taken on the Lumberjacks alone in the first half, as she scored 10 points on her own.

Audriana Spencer netted 15 points and Melissa Richardson added eight points and two steals. Coming off the bench, Cory Edwards had another solid effort with seven points and six rebounds. Renee Goldoff, also off the bench, led the Wildcats with eight rebounds.

Managing only a 30 percent shooting mark from the floor, the Lumberjacks were led by Katie Franci's 12 points and seven rebounds. No other Lumberjack made it to double-digits in the team’s season-low effort.

Neither team could find its range in the early minutes, with missed shots and turnovers more frequent than points. With the score only at 10-9 midway through the period, neither team appeared poised to away.

The Wildcats forged ahead further when Jade Smith-Williams hit a jumper with 6:24 remaining in the half.  That shot started the big surge that resulted in a 15-0 run to end the half.

The win tonight kept some impressive streaks alive for the Wildcats. Chico State has now won 64 games in a row when they are leading at halftime. It was also the 53rd straight victory in games in which they have limited their opponent to fewer than 60 points.
