ARCATA, Calif. — Mike Martin tallied a season-high 29 points and added nine rebounds for the Chico State men’s basketball team, but it wasn’t enough in a 97-93 loss to Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks’ Will Sheufelt drained 12 straight free throws during the final 34 seconds to hold off Chico State’s come-from-behind effort.
It was a disappointing loss for the Wildcats resulting in the fifth time this season the Wildcats have lost by four points or less. Chico State drops to 5-9 overall, 1-6 in the CCAA, while Humboldt State now holds a share of first place in the CCAA at 6-1, 11-3 overall.
Both teams enjoyed a strong shooting performance, each hitting 56 percent from the field. But the Jacks had many more opportunities at the free throw line, where they made 34-of-44 attempts. Chico State was 14-of-16 from the line.
The Lumberjacks needed every one of the free tosses to keep the Wildcats from coming back. Martin hit a three pointer with 1:04 remaining to cut the lead to five and Josh Jackson’s three pointer with 26 seconds remaining cut the lead to three, 89-86. After a pair of Lumberjack free throws and a pair of Wildcat free throws, Jackson cut the lead to 91-89 with another three pointer.
After two more Jack free throws, Martin made a layup to keep the deficit at two, 93-91. Then Andrew Ferrin followed up two HSU free throws with a tip in and three seconds on the clock. Sheufelt sunk his final two from the line for the 97-93 final.
Martin led six Wildcats in double figures. Josh Jackson netted 12, Darroll Phillips 11, and Rod Hawkins and Jesse Soto each finished with 10 points. Hawkins led the team with six assists and Justin Argenal recorded two steals.
Sheufelt finished with 25 points to lead the Jacks, while Devin Peal added 21, Grayson Moyer 17, and Cy Vandermeer 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Wildcats travel to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State tomorrow night at 7:30.
