CHICO, Calif. – Marlon Pierce scored 23 points and Michael Earl had 14 to lead the sixth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino men’s basketball team to a 76-54 victory against host Chico State Saturday night in Acker Gym. The Coyotes used a stifling defense that forced 28 Chico State turnovers to gain a 46-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
Pierce, who also dished out six assists, had four steals, as did Steve Gaston. Renardo Bass added three steals as the Coyotes improved to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the win.
Darroll Phillips paced Chico State (5-8, 1-5 CCAA) with 11 points and Mike Martin had 10. The Wildcats did their best work of the night on the glass, outrebounding the Coyotes 37-26. Rod Hawkins led the way with seven boards, while Jesse Soto, Shane Bradley, and Martin pulled down five apiece.
The Wildcats fell behind 10-2 in the early going and never recovered. They got as close as 19-15 on a Soto layup midway through the first half, but San Bernardino closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
The closest Chico State could get in the second half was 39-27 on Frank Igbekoyi’s three-point play, but the Coyotes scored the next five points and would eventually grow the lead to 76-47.
Chico State will embark on a four-game road trip next weekend, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Humboldt State Friday night.
