Tsagarakis sinks Wildcats with buzzer-beating three

CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State men’s basketball team turned the ball over twice in the final 16 seconds and Cal Poly Pomona’s Angelo Tsagarakis buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Broncos to a stunning 64-61 victory Friday at Acker Gym. Chico State led 61-57 with 29 seconds to play before Larry Gordon’s layup trimmed it to 61-59. Darroll Phillips stepped out of bounds on the ensuing inbounds play and the Broncos tied the game on Gordon’s layup with four seconds to play. Chico State tried to quickly advance the ball, but Rod Hawkins was called for a charge at half court with two seconds left. Chico State called a timeout to set its defense, but to no avail, as Tsagarakis ran from the weak side to the near corner, Rich Collins delivered a well timed inbounds pass, and the ball sailed silently through the net.

Chico State fell to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with its second straight home loss after starting the season 4-0 in Acker Gym. The Wildcats got a game-high 21 points from Phillips, who kept them in a game with five 3-pointers. Hawkins chipped in eight points and fellow true freshman Josh Jackson scored seven.

Tsagarakis matched Phillips with five 3-pointers and also dished out four assists to go along with his 20 points. Gordon contributed 18 points, a game-high nine rebounds, and four assists. Donnelle Booker chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

Chico State trailed 12-5 early on, but took a 16-12 lead on a Phillips 3-pointer with 8:57 left in the opening stanza. Booker’s layup at the 6:58 mark actually snapped a nearly nine-minute scoring drought for the Broncos.

Cal Poly Pomona ended the half with a 10-3 run to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room and then outscored the Wildcats 9-5 over the first five minutes of the second half to build their largest lead of the night, 38-31.

Chico State reclaimed the lead on a Casey Moll 3-pointer at the 9:55 mark, but neither team would gain an advantage of more than four points for the rest of the game. Hawkins gave Chico State a 58-56 lead with two free throws with 1:24 remaining, and then Josh Jackson made 1-of-2 free throws for a 59-56 lead with 54 seconds to play. Donnelle Booker answered with one free throw, but Hawkins made two more with 29 seconds to play, setting up the Broncos’ late-game heroics.

Cal Poly Pomona has now won four straight and six of its last seven games against Chico State. Chico State, meanwhile, has lost 18 of its last 20 conference games, including nine of its last 10 at home.

The Wildcats host CCAA leader Cal State San Bernardino, ranked No. 6 in the nation, Saturday at 7:30.
