SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Chico State women's soccer team snapped a three-match losing streak and goalkeeper Kari Gonzales tied the school's career wins record in a 1-0 victory at Cal State San Bernardino Friday.
Gonzales made five saves for her 25th career shutout and her 32nd win, which matches Nicole Adams' career win total for the most in Chico State history.
The win improved the Wildcats to 5-4 on the season and 2-3 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are now 3-4-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the CCAA. The Coyotes host Cal State Stanislaus at 12:30 p.m. Sunday while the Wildcats visit 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.
Junior forward Melissa Lindsay's fourth goal of the season proved to be the difference. After a scoreless first half in which the Wildcats dominated play, taking nine shots on goal to just two for the Coyotes, Chico State broke the ice with a low shot from the 18-yard line by Lindsay off a crossing pass to her feet by senior midfielder Katherine Bagwell.
Both teams had opportunities to score more goals. The Coyotes became more aggressive in the second half, forcing Gonzales to make four of her five saves in the final 45 minutes. It was the third shutout for Gonzales this season.
Leslie Rhodes stopped five shots on goal, all in the first half, for the Coyotes.
It was the fourth one-goal loss of the season for CSUSB.
