Volleyball team aces Chico State record

CHICO – The Wildcat volleyball team set a Chico State record with 21 service aces, including 12 in the final game, in a 3-0 win over William Jessup to open the 2007 home season. Game scores were 30-14, 30-15, 30-15.

Junior Kelly Smiland led the team with six aces, five of which came in the final game. Lindsay Macias recorded four aces, and Lacy Stringfellow and Stephanie Aschenbrenner each added three.

Smiland and freshman Crystal Trifeletti led the team with 11 kills apiece and Gillian Heydorff notched nine kills and led the team with seven digs in two games of play.

The Wildcats, who improved to 4-1 this season, opened the match with six straight points, including five behind the serving of Lacy Stringfellow. The Warriors never got any closer than five points and the Wildcats finished off the final three points with two Heydorff kills.

Game two was similar with William Jessup getting within four points early in the game, but Smiland got the ball with a 20-15 lead and reeled off the final 10 points, which included four kills by Heydorff.

Game three was tied up at 8-8 early on, but the Wildcats took off from there to build a comfortable 21-12 lead. Megan Cape ended the game with her only service ace of the match.

All-American Erica Brick started game one, recording 17 assists in the process, giving way to Aschenbrenner who played the final two games and collected 20 assists.

The Wildcats hit .405 in the match, while William Jessup recorded a .016 hitting percentage.

Next up for Chico State is the 12th Annual Premier Challenge in Denver, Colo., on Friday and Saturday.
