LA JOLLA, Calif. – The point of the game is to put the ball in the basket, hence the name basketball. So even though the Chico State women’s team played very good defense and displayed tremendous desire and effort, they dropped a 60-46 decision at 4th-ranked UC San Diego Saturday because they simply failed to put the ball into the basket with any regularity. The 8th-ranked Wildcats made just 16-of-53 shots (30 percent), including none in eight tries from beyond the arc. And they were only 14-of-22 (64 percent) from the free throw line and missed the front end of a pair of key bonus opportunities down the stretch.
Renee Goldoff finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks to lead Chico State, which dipped to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA with its third straight loss to UC San Diego. Amanda Monteith also played very well, contributing 12 points, five rebounds, and a trio of steals. But the rest of the Wildcats combined to shoot only 15 percent (5-for-34).
UC San Diego improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA behind Michelle Osier’s 19 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Alexis Gaskin chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
The loss was a bit of an anomaly for Chico State, which had won its last 72 games in which it had limited its opponents to fewer than 70 points.
After falling behind 21-10 in the early going, the Wildcats battled back and took their first lead on Renee Goldoff’s layup, beautifully set up by Jade Smith-Williams’ assist, that made it 24-23 late in the first half. The teams went to intermission deadlocked at 25.
Neither team led by more than two points in the second half until Osier’s back-to-back buckets saddled Chico State with a 41-37 deficit with 8:53 remaining. It was a deficit the Wildcats would not be able to overcome. After cutting the lead back to two on a pair of Goldoff free throws, Chico State left four scores in the next five UC San Diego possessions unanswered and the Tritons’ lead suddenly ballooned to 50-41 with 4:07 to play. In fact, the Tritons would end the game on a 23-9 run.
The Wildcats will continue their season-long nine-game road trip next weekend when they travel to Seattle to face Western Washington Friday and Seattle Pacific Saturday. They won’t play a home game until Jan. 4 when Cal State Monterey Bay comes to town.
