PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Chico State women's basketball team, ranked No. 15 in Division II, took on Stanford, the 5th-ranked Division I team in the nation, in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon. The result, a 95-44 Stanford win, was no surprise. That the Wildcats fared as well this season as they did last season against the Cardinal (a 103-57 Stanford win) with six true freshmen and only seven returners on the roster, was likely a pleasant surprise for the Wildcats.
Renee Goldoff and Melissa Richardson scored eight points apiece to lead Chico State, while Richardson also led the team with six rebounds and three assists. Jillian Harman led Stanford with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five assits.
After falling behind 10-0 early, Chico Sate scored 10 of the next 25 points and trailed 25-10 with eight minutes remaining in the second half. The Cardinal finished the half with a 23-5 run, to build a 48-15 advantage.
The action was the first at the collegiate level for Wildcats true freshmen Natasha Smith, Brandi Foster, Taylor Lydon, Molly Collins, and Ashley Washington. Smith logged seven minutes and grabbed a rebound. Foster played five minutes, scoring two points and pulling down a pair of boards. Lydon buried a 3-pointer and grabbed a pair of rebounds. Collins made both of her shots and finished with four points in eight minutes. And Washington played 21 minutes, finishing with three points and three rebounds.
The Wildcats will open up the regular season at home Friday, Nov. 16, with the first day of the annual Coslet Classic. Chico State will take on Mesa State Friday at 7:30 and then Texas A&m Commerce Saturday at 7:30.
