FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Five players scored in double-figures and the Chico State women’s basketball team cruised to its third straight win to start the season, beating Fort Valley State 86-68 in the opening game of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Friday night. The 15th-ranked Wildcats jumped out to a 16-4 lead that never dipped into single-digits to improve to 3-0.
Fort Valley State, picked to win its conference by Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches and a team that received votes in the preseason WBCA Coaches’ Poll, fell to 0-1.
Audriana Spencer led Chico State with 13 points and also pulled down six rebounds. Jade Smith-Williams, Amanda Monteith, Renee Goldoff, and Christine Vest finished with 10 points apiece. Goldoff notched eight rebounds and Vest grabbed seven. Jessica von Tillow came off the bench to score seven points, nab seven rebounds, and dish out three assists. And true freshman Ashley Washington scored eight points and had six rebounds in only eight minutes of action.
The Wildcats shot only 40 percent and made just 5-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc, but outrebounded Fort Valley State (also nicknamed the Wildcats) 60-35.
Chico State will face the Merrimack-Alaska Fairbanks winner Saturday night for the tournament title.
