CHICO, Calif. – Coslet Classic Most Valuable Player Renee Goldoff scored 26 points and pulled down 21 rebounds to lead the 15th-ranked Chico State women’s basketball team to a 69-58 win against 4th-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday night at Acker Gym.
Goldoff’s effort was truly a classic in the finale of the 35th annual Coslet. Her 21 rebounds were a career high, the most by a Chico State player since Kerri Cameron’s 21 boards against Humboldt State during the 1998-99 season, and just one off the Chico State record set by Val Ritchie during the 1974-75 season. Goldoff also shot 67 percent (10-for-15). Over the Classic’s two days, the 6-foot-1 junior post from Mission Hills averaged 27 points and 13.5 rebounds, while shooting 68 percent (21-for-31). Her career high in scoring entering the season was 15.
Goldoff was not alone in helping to propel the Wildcats to victory, however. Jade Smith-Williams finished with 13 points, and Audriana Spencer scored 11 points, dropped eight assists, and snared three steals. Amanda Monteith and Cory Edwards did most of their work on the defensive end, helping to guard preseason Division II Bulletin Player of the year Emily Brister, who scored 24 points but shot just 8-of-18 and went to the foul line only three times.
Chico State improved to 2-0 with the win and Goldoff and Spencer each earned All-Tournament honors.
Brister was also named to the All-Tournament team despite the fact the Buffaloes, who entered the weekend ranked No. 4 in the nation in both major polls, left Chico 0-2. Along with her 24 points, she contributed five rebounds, two assists, and a trio of steals. Courtney Lee was the only other Buffalo in double-figures with 10 points.
The Wildcats ran out to a 10-0 lead and never relinquished it. West Texas never trailed by more than 11 until the final seconds, however, and whittled the lead down to 60-58 on Holly Isaacs free throw with 2:29 to play. But Brister missed the potential go-ahead 3-pointer seconds later and Edwards converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:59 remaining to begin a 9-0 game-ending run.
Sonoma State 81, Mesa State 69
Genny Anderson scored a game-high 22 points and Danae Wellander finished with 17 points, seven assists, and five rebounds as Sonoma State beat Mesa State to finish the weekend 2-0. Mesa State, led by Brittany Fowler’s 19 points, finished the weekend 0-2.
Lauren Redfield scored 18 points for the Seawolves and Chelsey Armacost scored 16 points thanks to 8-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe. The Seawolves also defended beautifully, allowing only three Mesa State assists and forcing 19 turnovers.
Cassie Hutto finished with 17 points for Mesa Sate. Kelsie Gourdin chipped in 16, and Lindsey Kame scored 14.
