CHICO, Calif. - In what could be an NCAA Championship Tournament first-round preview, visiting Cal State San Bernardino swept Chico State 30-28, 30-21, 30-26 in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday night. Cal State San Bernardino will likely garner the No. 1 seed in the Far West Region when the NCAA field is announced Monday at 6 a.m. PST. Chico State entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in the region, but with consecutive home losses, the Wildcats could wind up as the No. 8 seed, matched up with the Coyotes again.
Jessica Granados pounded out 17 kills on .382 hitting, had five service aces, and also notched 11 digs to lead the Coyotes, who improved to 25-2 overall and 17-1 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino entered the match ranked No. 4 nationally and clinched the CCAA Championship more than one week ago. Jane Chafeh finished with nine kills, while Ashtin Hall tallied eight kills and 12 digs. Meghan Haas paced the Coyotes defense with 14 digs, while Sara Hoffman dished out 38 assists to lead the offense.
Lindsay Macias paced Chico State with 15 kills and nine digs. Kelly Smiland and Whitney Johnson notched seven kills apiece. Lacy Stringfellow led the team with 13 digs. With its sixth loss in the last seven matches and eighth in the last 11, the Wildcats dipped to 16-12 overall and 9-9 in the CCAA.
It was the final career home match for fourth-year seniors Stringfellow, Johnson, Samantha Davis, and Amanda Ley. They were honored in a ceremony before the match and were all in Head Coach Cody Hein's starting lineup. Ley finished with seven digs and Davis had two to go along with one block.
