CARSON, Calif. - The Chico State womens soccer team clinched its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division title and fourth straight postseason berth with a 3-2 victory at 24th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday afternoon. It was the Wildcats second victory over a top-25 ranked team in the last three days.
Melissa Lindsay, Katie Kause, and Katherine Bagwell scored goals for the Wildcats, who have won five straight road matches and have lost just once in their last nine matches overall to improve to 12-4-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills 12-3-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the CCAA.
Chico State returns home for its final match of the regular season Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus at 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats have amassed 28 points (3 per win, 1 per tie) with just one match remaining. UC San Diego, meanwhile, has amassed 28 points with two matches remaining in the race for the CCAA Championship Tournament's top seed. Cal State Dominguez Hills, with 23 points and two matches to go, still has an outside chance at the top seed.
The Wildcats trailed early in the match Sunday, but scored three unanswered goals between the 25th and 56th minute to take control of the match.
Corrie Hirokawa gave the Toros a 1-0 lead when she went far post to beat Wildcats goalkeeper Kari Gonzales. Lindsay knotted the score 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute. Kause volleyed home Bagwell's corner kick at the near post in the 35th minute to put the Wildcats into the lead for good.
After intermission, Ashley Gunther passed to Bagwell who went low and far post to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored in the 77th minute to draw within one goal, but could not score the equalizer.
