No. 19 Wildcats beaten by No. 23 Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Macias recorded a match-high 21 kills for the Chico State volleyball team, but it wasn’t enough to overpower Cal State L.A. on Friday night. The Wildcats, ranked No. 19 in the nation and No. 6 in the West fell to the No. 23 Golden Eagles in four games. Chico State, Cal State L.A., and UC San Diego, who the Wildcats play on Saturday, are now in a three-way tie for second place in the CCAA standings at 8-4. San Bernardino leads the CCAA with a perfect 12-0 record.

Cal State L.A. (12-7 overall) won the opening game 30-22. Chico State (15-7) answered back with a 30-24 win in game two. The Golden Eagles won the final two games, 30-22 and 30-28 for the match.

The fourth game was the closest of the match. Chico State took an early 12-9 lead before Cal State L.A. went on a 10-2 run to take a 19-14 lead. The Wildcats then rallied and after five ties, took a 28-27 edge after a Cal State L.A. service error. The Golden Eagles won the final three points of the game for a 30-28 win and the match.

Macias has now collected 1,086 kills in her career and is 80 shy of tying Stacey Clifton’s (2001-03) school record of 1,166. Based on Macias’ averages this season, she’s on track to break the career kills record during the Wildcats’ final homestand of the season, Nov. 9-10.

Gillian Heydorff and Cryastal Trifeletti each had nine kills. Lacy Stringfellow tallied 22 digs and Whitney Johnson and Erica Brick each recorded three blocks. Brick had 42 of the Wildcats’ 48 assists.

CSLA’s Airess Padda had 19 kills and hit at a .395 percentage to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures in kills. Ursula Vieira had 16 kills, Bianca Gorospe had 15 kills and Lindsay Laakso had 13 kills.
