CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State volleyball team took care of things inside and out in a 30-25, 30-20, 31-29 sweep of Humboldt State Friday night in Acker Gym. Outside hitters Lindsay Macias and Gillian Heydorff combined for 29 kills, while middle blockers Whitney Johnson and Crystal Trifeletti each hit over .350 and combined for 17 kills.
Chico State, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and No. 5 in the Pacific Region, improved to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. They own a one-game lead over Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A., and UC San Diego in the race for second place in the CCAA.
Humboldt State, led by Mallory Briney’s 10 kills, fell to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks got 12 digs from Kelly Catherina, 31 assists from Liz Shannon, and four blocks from Danielle Wells.
Macias’ 18 kills did not come easy. Humboldt State focused its defensive efforts on the Wildcats’ offensive star. But she came on strong in the third game with eight of her 18 kills. Early in the match, the junior moved past Amber Crezee (1997-2000) and into second place on Chico State’s career kills list with her third kill of the night. She now has 1,065 career kills, trailing only Stacey Clifton (1,166) in the Wildcat record books.
Heydorff, meanwhile, notched 11 kills on .333 hitting and added four service aces to the mix. Abby Ranzau also had four service aces for the Wildcats, who finished the evening with 13.
Trifeletti hit .375 en route to nine kills and a trio of blocks, while Johnson hit .353 on the way to eight kills.
Erica Brick dished out 43 assists and had 12 digs and five kills on .417 hitting. Lacy Stringfellow, Chico State’s all-time leader in digs, led all players with 13.
Second place will be on the line for the Wildcats next weekend when they travel to face 19th-ranked Cal State L.A. and 23rd-ranked UC San Diego.
