University Stadium

University Stadium serves as the home of Chico State men’s and women’s track & field, providing a versatile and tradition-rich venue in the heart of campus. Surrounded by a classic stadium layout and open sightlines, the facility supports both high-level competition and large campus gatherings, making it a central hub for Chico State Athletics and the university community.

The stadium has a deep history within Chico State, previously serving as the home of the Wildcat football program until its discontinuation in 1997. Today, it continues to evolve while honoring its past, remaining an important venue for athletic excellence and campus tradition.

University Stadium has also been the site of memorable performances, including one of the most iconic moments in program history. In 2008, Chico State standout and future USTFCCCA Hall of Fame inductee Scott Bauhs became just the 308th American to break the four-minute mile, crossing in 3:59.81 at the Chico Invitational in front of 2,400 fans. In doing so, he shattered a 37-year-old school record and cemented the stadium’s place in Wildcat track & field history.

Since 2015, University Stadium has undergone key upgrades to enhance both the student-athlete and spectator experience. Improvements include the installation of new bleacher seating on the west side and upgraded, modernized stadium lighting, allowing the facility to better accommodate evening competitions and major events.

The venue features a well-maintained, all-weather track surface designed to support high-level training and competition, paired with a natural grass infield that allows for multiple uses. Beyond athletics, University Stadium plays a significant role in campus life as the home of Chico State’s annual Commencement ceremonies, welcoming thousands of graduates, families, and guests each year.

Blending history, versatility, and continued investment, University Stadium remains a cornerstone of Chico State Athletics and a gathering place for some of the university’s most meaningful moments.
