The primary job for batters at the top of a softball lineup is to get on base so the power-hitting middle of the order can drive them home. In Chico State’s weekend series against Cal State San Bernardino, Wildcat freshman outfielder Hailey Seva proved she could do both batting in the two-hole, displaying power and a knack for getting aboard and  repeatedly crossing home plate. Her big contributions to the ’Cats’ series sweep of the Coyotes makes Seva the latest Wildcat of the Week.

All told, Seva hit safely in all four contests against San Bernardino, batting .583 (7-for-12), blasting a pair of home runs, reaching base nine times, scoring six runs, and driving in four while posting a 1.083 slugging percentage and .643 on-base percentage. Seva’s outstanding weekend helped Chico State improve to 14-4 on the season and 6-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

In Friday’s doubleheader opener, Seva had two hits and reached base in all three of her at-bats, scoring twice in the Wildcats’ 4-1 victory. But it was during Saturday’s double dip that the Granite Bay product did the majority of her damage—in game one, Seva hit the first home run of her Chico State career and drove in three runs to highlight a 3-for-4 performance as the ’Cats blanked the ’Yotes 5-0. In the nightcap, Seva homered and scored twice as Chico State came back from three runs down to score four times in the bottom of the seventh inning and steal a 5-4 win, completing the series sweep.

Seva is currently hitting an even .300 on the season and ranks third on the Wildcats in runs scored (10), runs batted in (9), and slugging percentage (.525). She is tied for the team lead with two stolen bases.

Seva and the Wildcats are on the road this week, traveling to Arcata for a four-game set against Cal Poly Humboldt. Friday’s series-opening doubleheader gets underway at 12 noon, with a Saturday twin bill slated for 11 a.m.
