There were admittedly few bright spots for the Chico State women's basketball team last Saturday, when the Wildcats bowed to visiting UC Santa Cruz at Acker Gym. Mikaila Wegenke, however, was a notable exception, turning in one of her best all-around efforts of the season.
The Brentwood product was not only the 'Cats' leading scorer, she was the team's leading rebounder and shot blocker, and her impressive productivity against the Banana Slugs makes Wegenke the latest Wildcat of the Week. Â
Wegenke came off the bench and logged nearly 26 minutes of action, scoring a team-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting (and 4-of-5 from the free throw line) while hauling in seven rebounds, matching her season best. Wegenke's two blocked shots marked the third time in the 2019–20 campaign she has registered multiple blocks in a game.
Wegenke currently ranks third on the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding, averaging 6.3 points and 4.1 boards, respectively. She is also second on the team in blocked shots (10) and fourth in assists (16).
Wegenke and the Wildcats return to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this week, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday and Cal State LA Saturday at Acker Gym. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m. The Wildcats are currently in fifth place, but only one game out of first in the loss column.
