Chico State Athletics

During its recent four-game winning streak, the Chico State women's basketball team has been torching its opponents from behind the 3-point line. Since December 7, the Wildcats have shot over 45 percent from behind the arc, and their 36 treys have accounted for nearly 40 percent of the team's scoring. No one has been hotter from long distance than Myli Martinez—the sophomore guard has drained 10 3-pointers during the streak, providing a valuable offensive spark to the 'Cats' attack. Her contributions to the team's recent success makes Martinez the latest Wildcat of the Week.   
 
Martinez has averaged nine points in her last four games to help Chico State improve to 8-4 on the season and move the Wildcats into a tie for fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Fairfield native buried five 3-points December 14 on the way to a career-high 17 points in the 'Cats' 66-62 win over Sonoma State, and in the Wildcats' most recent victory—a 60-51 triumph December 21 over Humboldt State—Martinez connected for half of the team's six 3-pointers, scoring nine points while also grabbing four rebounds against the Lumberjacks.
 
Heading into 2020, Martinez is averaging 6.4 points a game, and is second on the Wildcats with 17 3-pointers on the season.
 
Martinez and the Wildcats return from the holiday break to play a pair of important CCAA contests. Chico State travels to Southern California to take on Cal State LA Thursday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. tilt Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
