Chico State senior midfielder Fabian Roman is a serious fight fan. His Twitter feed is full of fútbol, boxing, and UFC.
On the pitch, Roman is clearly influenced by both. He is tough and scrappy, yet employs a delicate touch and sensational skill level. That was all on display Sunday in a performance that earned Roman Wildcat of the Week honors.
Roman delivered an elegant assist and unyielding defense to help the Wildcats blank UC Santa Cruz 2-0 at University Soccer Stadium and earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
After posting three goals and four assists last season, Roman is again heating up. His assist on Sunday's first goal marked his second in Chico State's last two home matches.
Both showcased Roman's ability to react nimbly and precisely.
Sunday, Roman's quick thinking and exacting touch set the Wildcats' match-winning goal in motion. Jeremiah Egujie won a clearance and tapped the ball over to Roman in the middle of the pitch. With one touch, Roman deftly played the ball over Egujie to Alex Fluitt on the right wing. Fluitt headed the ball forward as Egujie made his run toward the top of the 18-yard box. Egujie was first to the ball, ahead of two trailing defenders and quicker than the charging goalkeeper, and slotted it home.
Roman and the Wildcats will be at home for four of their final six conference matches beginning with Friday afternoon's showdown with rival Sonoma State.
