Chico State center fielder Sonny Cortez sparked the baseball team to a four-game sweep of Stanislaus State from the top of the order over the weekend. The senior stole five bases, scored four times, tripled, and drove in two, while hitting .438 (7-for-16) to earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
Cortez has now reached base safely in all 15 of the 29th-ranked Wildcats' games this season, and 18 straight dating back to the 2016 campaign.
Cortez opened the series by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases in a 4–3 win. He also ended the game by making a gorgeous running catch in deep center field with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.
Cortez went 2-for-4 again in the second game, a 6–1 victory. He drove in the game's first run with a single and later tripled and scored. Â
The senior went 3-for-8 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in Sunday's doubleheader sweep in Turlock. Those stolen bases moved Cortez into a tie for eighth on the school's career list with 30.
Cortez now has 98 hits in a Chico State uniform and hopes to reach the century mark this weekend when the Wildcats host San Francisco State for a four-game series beginning with the first Nettleton Stadium night game of the season Friday at 6. The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
