Chico State's 2013 volleyball season concluded over three weeks ago, but Wildcat setter Torey Thompson continues to turn heads as the year's postseason awards are passed out. The Newport Beach native capped off a memorable freshman year Dec. 11 when the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) included Thompson on its All-America Honorable Mention list. That brings her postseason awards total to six…seven, if you include Thompson being named the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Thompson finished the year with 1,192 assists in her first season as a Wildcat, and her 11.46 assists per set average led the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while ranking 12th among Division II setters nationwide.
Thompson recorded at least 40 assists in 19 of Chico State's 29 matches in 2013, including a career-high 61 Nov. 26 against Cal State Monterey Bay. She also contributed 56 kills, 40 blocks and 18 service aces to the Wildcats' 16-13 season.
As a result of her outstanding play, Thompson reaped a harvest of postseason awards. Prior to earning All-America honors, she was a First Team All-CCAA selection and was named the conference's Freshman of the Year. Thompson also received All-West Region honors from both the AVCA and Daktronics, and was the AVCA's pick for West Region Freshman of the Year.
Thompson's national award makes her the seventh Chico State volleyball player – and third Wildcat setter – to earn All-America honors since 2007.
