When James Staniland enters the game, the opposition knows exactly what he’s going to try to do. Still, they rarely stop in. Staniland seems to always find a way to stealthily lose his defender to spot up for a 3-pointer. And when the senior from Ventura gets a good look, he knocks it down at a rate rarely witnessed in Chico State history.

Staniland sank an astounding 6-of-8 threes over the weekend in the Carl’s Jr. Mac Martin Invitational to earn Wildcat of the Week honors. The senior from Ventura scored 20 points in 26 minutes of play. 

Though still a dozen 3-pointers away from qualifying, Staniland would rank second in school history with his current career 3-point percentage of .459 (38-for-83). He shot 45 percent from beyond the arc last season, which ranks eighth in Chico State single-season history.

Staniland has also helped the Wildcats on the defensive end this season. He leads the team with four steals.

He and the Wildcats will begin the defense of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship this weekend when they open conference play at home against Cal Poly Pomona Friday and Humboldt State Saturday.
