Many Chico State athletes contributed to the Wildcat men’s track and field team’s victory at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships; none more so than thrower Eric Wright, who delivered a weekend to remember by notching an NCAA provisional mark in winning the hammer throw and posting three PR’s to help the Wildcats roll to their seventh consecutive conference title. Wright’s efforts in his three field events have earned the junior from Eureka the Wildcat of the Week award.
Wright excelled in his two Friday events Friday – his winning toss of 183-feet-11 (exceeding his previous best by over six feet) in the hammer throw not only earned an NCAA provisional mark, it was the second longest in the CCAA this season and the fourth best ever by a Wildcat. Wright also placed third in the shot put, with a PR heave of 51-feet-4.50.
Saturday Wright wrapped up the CCAA Championships with a seventh place finish in the discus, producing a personal best with a heave of 139-feet-04. All told, Wright racked up 18 points for Chico State in CCAA Championships competition, as the Wildcats tallied 290.5 points during the three-day event to easily outdistance the field.
The Chico State men’s track and field team will be in Turlock Friday to take part in the Stanislaus Twilight Invitational. It is the Wildcats’ final regular season meet before the NCAA Championships May 27-29 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
