Ask Alex DeVito what position he plays on the Chico State baseball team and you are likely to get a surprising answer: hitter.
He's not wrong. After a productive stint as a pinch hitter early this season, DeVito has been the Wildcats' designated hitter in each of the last 12 games. And he's doing just what his job implies—hitting. DeVito banged out six more hits during the Wildcats' four-game sweep of San Francisco State Sunday and Monday at Nettleton Stadium to secure Wildcat of the Week honors.
He homered, drove in five runs, and scored three times as the 24th-ranked Wildcats improved to 12-4 this season and took over sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. DeVito has now hit safely in eight straight games and reached base in 12 in a row, raising his team-leading batting average to .372 and slugging percentage fo .581. DeVito also leads the Wildcats in hits, doubles, home runs, and RBI.
The junior transfer from LA Mission Community College went 1-for-4 with an RBI in each of the Wildcats' wins Sunday. He went 3-for-3 and drove in Chico State's first run as they rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win Monday's opener. DeVito also walked and scored to help spark the Wildcats' six-run eighth inning. He closed the series by going 1-for-2 with a two-run shot in the first inning that put Chico State ahead to stay—his second of the season.
The Wildcats are back in action this weekend for a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay set to begin Friday at noon.
