Wildcats to take part in the two-day, 36-hole Point Loma Nazarene Super San Diego Championship

CHICO – It’s been over three months since the Chico State women’s golf team has teed it up in tournament play, but the understandably anxious Wildcats will finally return to action this Monday and Tuesday, kicking off the spring portion of their 2011-12 schedule with a trip to San Diego to take part in the Point Loma Nazarene University Super San Diego Championship at Riverwalk Golf Course.

Chico State is part of a 22-team field that includes 106 participating golfers from Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior college programs. The Super San Diego Championship is the first-ever tournament hosted by the Point Loma Nazarene women’s golf program.

Not much change in the Wildcats’ starting lineup – Head Coach Kathy Dais is sending the five golfers to San Diego that made the majority of Chico State’s fall starts. The ’Cats will be led by junior Alex Bush (who averaged 80.4 strokes per round in four fall tournaments), sophomore Sarah McComish (81.5), senior Shelby Hooper (81.6), senior Katie Canadas (82.8), and sophomore Heather Fegley (85.4).

Among the teams the Wildcats will be competing against in the PLNU Super San Diego Championship are nationally-ranked D-II programs Sonoma State (No. 6 in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association top 25 poll) and No. 16 Dallas Baptist. Teams from Idaho State, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will represent Division I schools in the 36-hole event.

The forecast for the tournament is calling for partly sunny conditions on Monday, with mostly cloudy skies on Tuesday. Temperatures will be pleasant, ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s.

The PLNU Super San Diego Championship will get underway Monday morning with an 11:30 shotgun start.
