LONG BEACH — Chico State President Paul J. Zingg and Director of Athletics Anita Barker were presented with the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioner’s Cup at the conference’s Presidents/Chancellors Group meetings Wednesday in Long Beach. The Wildcats won the award last spring for their achievements during the 2010-11 academic year.
CCAA Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert, along with Apple Computer’s representatives Anne VanMiddlesworth and Jay Matheson presented President Zingg and Barker with the glass trophy and an Apple laptop computer.
The Commissioner’s Cup is presented in association with Apple Computer and is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight (8) of the CCAA’s 12 championship sport offerings.
Chico State won CCAA titles in men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track & field, finished second in men’s soccer and men’s golf, and third in softball and baseball. The women’s basketball team and men’s basketball team also finished in the top half of the conference standings.
“We’re honored and very excited to win this award,” said Chico State Director of Athletics Anita Barker. “Chico State Athletics has always been a team effort and everyone contributed to this year’s success.”
Chico State had been runner-up four times to five-time winner UC San Diego.
An institution's Commissioner's Cup ranking is calculated using its top two league finishes in the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, as well as the highest two remaining finishes, regardless of season.
The CCAA sponsors the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and women’s volleyball in the fall, men’s and women’s basketball in the winter, and men's golf, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s track and field in the spring. Institutions winning the conference tournament in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and baseball deduct one (1) point from their regular season finish in those respective sports.
