The Chico State women’s soccer team is finally receiving some recognition. That’s what a trip to the Final Four will do. Defender Molly Downtain was deemed a National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Women’s Division II Third Team All-American and First Team All-West Region selection, with defenders Carly Singer and Kasey Wall snagging Third Team All-West Region accolades it was announced Friday.
Downtain, now a three time All-Region award winner, wrapped up her career as the program’s most prolific playoff performer ever. The defender converted match-clinching penalty kicks in two NCAA Championship Tournament matches, including this season’s opening-round win against Cal State Stanislaus.
This season, Downtain anchored a defense that registered 10 shutouts, including three during the Wildcats’ surprising five-match NCAA Tournament run during which the team allowed just two goals.
Singer and Wall were also part of that sparkling defense, but also provided an offensive spark – Singer contributing three goals and five assists, and Wall chipping in with three goals and an assist. Singer was also 3-for-3 on her postseason penalty kick attempts.
Last month Wall was named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Second Team, while Downtain and Singer were each All-CCAA honorable mention selections.
