All-CCAA status for Leek, Villaescusa

Junior hitter, setter honored for outstanding conference play in 2011

WALNUT CREEK – Jessica Leek was the Chico State volleyball team’s most consistent offensive weapon in 2011, thanks in large part to the sets provided by teammate Sable Villaescusa. So it only made sense that the two Wildcat standouts would both be honored Wednesday by the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) – Leek was named to the All-CCAA First Team, while Villaescusa was an All-CCAA Second Team selection.

This is the second All-CCAA honor for Leek, who was a Second Team all-conference selection last season. Leek led Chico State with 321 kills and 36 service aces, and was second on the team in blocks (52), digs (275), kills-per-set (3.15) and hitting percentage (.276). The junior opposite hitter ranked third among CCAA players in service aces (0.35 per set) and eighth in point (3.76 a set). Leek racked up double-digit kills in 18 matches during the just-completed 2011 season, including a career-high 25 kills Oct. 14 against Humboldt State.

This is Leek’s second postseason award of 2011 – last week she was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Volleyball First Team.

With Wednesday’s announcement, Villaescusa has won two consecutive All-CCAA Second Team honors.  She posted 1,062 assists this season, marking the third straight year the native of Rancho Cucamonga has gone up and over the 1,000 mark, and making her just the third setter in Chico State history to collect at least 3,000 career assists. Villaescusa’s average of 10.95 assists per set was a single-season career best and ranked third among CCAA setters in 2011. She also added 69 kills, 20 service aces, 207 digs and 31 blocks to the Chico State attack.

For the second straight year, Samantha Middleborn of Cal State San Bernardino was named the CCAA’s Most Valuable Player. Sonoma State’s Regan Richert and Kelsey Hull were selected as Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively, while Kim Cherniss of Cal State San Bernardino was named the CCAA Coach of the Year.
