BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Only two of the 11 schools competing in the Viking Invitational Tuesday bettered its team score from the day before – unfortunately, the Chico State women’s golf team wasn’t one of them. Like most of the field at Bellingham Golf and Country Club, the Wildcats saw their scores soar in the tournament’s final round, posting a collective 50-over par 338 to finish in 10th place overall with a 36-hole total of 78-over 654.
Sarah McComish was the lone Chico State golfer to finish in the top 30 on the individual leaderboard. The sophomore from Salem, Ore. followed Monday’s opening round 78 with an 11-over par 83 Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 29th place with a total score of 17-over 161.
Alex Bush, who also shot a 78 Monday, delivered a 13-over par 85 in her final round to grab a share of 35th place with a two-day score of 19-over 163. Shelby Hooper’s 80-85-165 was good for 38th place; Katie Canadas carded an 89 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 43rd place with a total score of 25-over 169, and Heather Fegley sliced a stroke off her Monday round with a 13-over 85 on the final 18 holes to wrap up the tournament with a 27-over par 171 and a share of 48th place.
Host school Western Washington University, ranked eighth in the country, shared the Viking Invitational title with No. 21 Sonoma State, as both teams finished with a 36-hole total of 33-over par 609. Courtney Soekland of Cal State Monterey Bay took home medalist honors, topping the individual leaderboard with a score of 76-70-146.
