CHICO – The Chico State volleyball team, fresh from a successful showing in the Seawolf Spike Tournament, will be at Acker Gym this Tuesday at 7 p.m. to play its home opener against the Warriors of William Jessup University. In addition to seeing the 2010 edition of the Wildcats in action for the first time, fans are invited to come check out Acker’s refurbished and sparkling new gym floor.
The ’Cats enter their Tuesday match after taking three of four over the weekend in Rohnert Park to open the 2010 season. Chico State posted four-set victories over Dominican and BYU-Hawaii in Friday’s opening day of the Seawolf Spike Tourney, then beat Grand Canyon before dropping a four-set decision to Seattle Pacific in Saturday’s two matches. Jessica Leek led the Wildcats with 55 kills and was named to the Seawolf Spike All-Tournament team.
William Jessup, an NAIA school that plays in the California Pacific Conference, comes into its match with the Wildcats 0-8 on the year. The Warriors were in Seaside over the weekend competing in the Cal State Monterey Bay-hosted Otter Classic Volleyball Tournament; after bowing to the host Otters and Notre Dame de Namur Friday, William Jessup was beaten in four sets Saturday by Colorado State University-Pueblo. The Warriors, 15-9 in 2009, are led by reigning California Pacific Conference Coach of the Year Terry Stafford.
Acker Gym received quite a facelift during the summer, as the entire floor was stripped and sanded down to the wood for the first time in nearly 20 years. The wood was refinished and re-painted, leaving a playing surface that is as eye-catching as it is functional. Fans and players alike will enjoy the new-look Acker Gym, as the Chico State volleyball team tries to christen it with a victory Tuesday night.
Those unable to attend the match can follow the action via Live Stats on the Wildcat Athletics website.
