CHICO, Calif. - A California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championship filled with steady rain and top-notch competition concluded Friday with the Chico State Wildcat men's team out in front and on line to bring home a sixth consecutive conference championship.
At the end of Friday's second day of competition, the Chico State men's track & field team leads the CCAA Championships with 45 points (with five events scored), followed by Cal State Stanislaus (36 points), Humboldt State (35 points), and UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona (33 points each). The Wildcats are attempting to win the men's CCAA Track & Field Championship for the sixth straight year.
On the women's side, UC San Diego heads into Saturday's final day with a five-point lead over second place Chico State; the Tritons have 62 points through five scored events, while the Wildcats have 57. Cal State L.A. finished Friday a distant third in the team rankings with 43 points. The UC San Diego women are trying to repeat as CCAA champions for a five consecutive season.

A few event scheduling changes: due to the rain that has been falling non-stop since about noon, Friday's men's and women's pole vault events have been moved to Saturday; the men's pole vault will start at 8:30 a.m., with the women's pole vault immediately to follow. The women's triple jump will immediately follow the women's pole vault, with the men's triple jump to follow. The men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase preliminaries were scratched due to a lack of runners; the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase will run as scheduled on Saturday.
High-energy 10,000-meter run wraps up second day of CCAA Championships
CHICO, Calif. - Friday's day two of the CCAA Track & Field Championships ended on an exciting note with the men's 10,000-meter run at University Stadium on the Chico State campus. The race was won by Jersain Torres of Cal Poly Pomona, with the Wildcats' Jeff Wilson finishing second by less than two seconds.
Torres posted a winning 10k time of 31 minutes, 53.49 seconds, with Wilson finishing second at 31:55.42. Humboldt State's Andrew Sylvester came in third with a time of 31:59.06. Chico State's Alex Sharp and Joey Kochlacs came in fourth and fifth with near identical times - Sharp posted a final of 32:28.24 with Kochlacs finishing at 32:28.26.

Wilhelm wins men's discus in CCAA Championships
CHICO, Calif. - The final field event of Friday's second day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships was won by Humboldt State's Thomas Wilhelm, who delivered the top throw in the men's discus for his second consecutive conference title.
Wilhelm claimed first place honors with a throw of 46.86 meters, over two meters longer than second place finisher Cuauhtemoc Vallejo-Howard, who posted a throw of 44.72 meters. Fred Cook of UC San Diego (40.54 meters) came in third.
Chico State's Matt Jarvis finished fourth in the discus...his best throw of the day was 39.23 meters.

Wildcats Lonnegren and Rogers-Wright automatic qualifiers in men's 200-meter dash preliminaries
CHICO, Calif. - In an event that featured four heats and 25 runners, Jonathan Willaims of Cal Poly Pomona turned in the best time in the men's 200-meter dash preliminaries Friday during a rain-soaked second day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships at Chico State's University Stadium. Two Wildcats, Nick Lonnegren and Bojurie Rogers-Wright, also advanced to Saturday's final eight-runner field.
Willaims won his heat in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.70 seconds; Lonnegren and Rogers-Wright were also heat winners with times of 21.94 and 22.41 seconds, respectively. Cal Poly Pomona's Carter Griffin was the other preliminary heat winner, turning in a time of 21.88.

Baham posts best time in prelims of men's 400-meter hurdles; three Wildcats qualify for finals
CHICO, Calif. - Leon Baham of UC San Diego put up the top time Friday in the preliminaries of the men's 400-meter hurdles during the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships at Chico's University Stadium. Three Wildcat runners - Oliver Shabram, Chris Sansoe and Robert Nagle - will also advance to Saturday's final.
Baham's winning time in the 400-meter hurdles was 54.03 seconds. Shabram finished second in Baham's heat at 54.22. Sansoe finished fifth overall, clocking in at 57.38 seconds, while Nagle came in eighth with a time of 59.98 seconds.

Five Wildcats qualify for finals in 800-meter run
CHICO, Calif. - Chico State dominated the field in the 800-meter run preliminaries Friday during the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships, with no less than five runners qualifying for Saturday's final in the event.
David Wellman was an automatic qualifier, winning his heat with a time of 1 minute, 56.21 seconds. Wellman's Wildcats teammate, Michael Wickman, was also a heat winner at 1:59.50. Also qualifying for Chico State were Clinton Hayes (1:56.25), Kyle Robinson (1:57.16) and Brian Nelson (1:59.99).

Williams wins men's 100-meter prelims; three Wildcat runners qualify for finals
CHICO, Calif. - Jonathan Williams of Cal Poly Pomona just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, but his time of 10.68 seconds topped the field Friday in the men's 100-meter dash preliminaries during the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships at Chico State's University Stadium. Three Wildcat runners - Jake Nelson, Nick Lonnegren and Bojurie Rogers-Wright - also qualified for Saturday's 100-meter final.
Nelson placed second in the preliminaries, winning his heat with a time of 10.87 seconds, while Lonnegren finished second in Williams' heat with a time of 10.83. Rogers-Wright came in fifth overall in the preliminaries, clocking in at 10.89 seconds.

UC San Diego's Leon Baham earns provisional, Chico State's Jake Nelson qualifies for finals in men's 110-meter hurdles
CHICO, Calif. - Another NCAA provisional bid was notched Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships, this time in the men's 110-meter hurdles preliminaries. UC San Diego's Leon Baham won the event with a provisional qualifying time of 14.63 seconds...Jake Nelson of Chico State just missed a provisional bid, but automatically qualified for Saturday's final with a time of 14.68.
Jake Deavers of Cal Poly Pomona finished third on an extremely wet University Stadium track, posting a time of 15.09 seconds.

Pomona's Griffin posts top time in men's 400-meter dash preliminaries
CHICO, Calif. - Carter Griffin of Cal Poly Pomona automatically qualified for Saturday's 400-meter dash finals, turning in a time of 49.22 seconds in Friday's preliminaries. Terry Gross of Cal State Stanislaus finished second with an automatic qualifying time of 49.62, followed by Chico State's Max Zavala, who qualified for Saturday's final with a time of 49.77 seconds.

Williams earns provisional, Chico State's Jake Nelson finishes second in men's long jump
CHICO, Calif. - Jonathan Williams of Cal Poly Pomona earned an NCAA provisional bid as he took top honors in the men's long jump Friday during second day action in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships at Chico State's University Stadium. Jake Nelson of Chico State finished a solid second.
Williams won with a jump of 7.17 meters, surpassing the provisional minimum by .02 meters. Nelson posted his best distance of the season, turning in a jump of 6.95 meters. Luther Bell of Cal State Stanislaus finished third at 6.84 meters. Chico State's Clayton Francis finished sixth with a jump of 6.51 meters.

Stanislaus State junior takes first in men's hammer throw
CHICO, Calif. - Cuauhtemoc Vallejo-Howard of Cal State Stanislaus won the men's hammer throw during Friday action in the CCAA Track & Field Championships. The Warriors junior grabbed first place honors with a throw of 53.09 meters; Chico State's Matt Jarvis, who earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark earlier this season, finished second with a throw of 51.11 meters. Fred Cook of UC San Diego took third place at 50.16 meters. Seth Stroing of Chico State finished 11th in the hammer throw with a distance of 40.88 meters.

Linker wins Decathlon in CCAA Championships
CHICO, Calif. - Josh Linker of Cal State L.A. led most of the way, finishing the first day of Decathlon competition in first place, then after briefly falling to second place Saturday, finished strong, winning two of the last three events to win the CCAA Championships Decathlon with an overall total of 6,782 points, good for a provisional qualifying bid in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
In addition to Linker, Michael Hernandez of Cal Poly Pomona earned a provisional NCAA bid, finishing second in the Decathlon with 6,515 points.
Chico State's Cody Uebelhardt finished sixth in the 10-man Decathlon field, with a total of 5,366 points. Wildcat teammate Michael Storer came in eighth with 5,112 points, thanks in large part to winning the Decathlon's final event, the 1,500-meter run.

Linker claimed the winning throw in the javelin at 163 feet, 2 inches. Hernandez finished second at 152 feet, 7 inches, with Humboldt State's Brian Belue coming in third with a throw of 152 feet, 1 inch. Uebelhardt finished fourth in the javelin at 147 feet, 10 inches, while Storer came in 10th at 26 feet, 1 inch.

Linker also won the Decathlon pole vault at 15 feet, 6.5 inches, with Hernandez finishing second at 14 feet, 6.75 inches. Storer came in sixth in the pole vault at 12 feet, 3.25 inches, while Uebelhardt finished ninth in the event with a vault of nine feet, 11.75 inches.

Earlier Friday, Belue won the Decathlon's discus event with a winning toss was 37.32 meters, followed by Linker (37.15 meters) and Hernandez (34.13 meters). Uebelhardt finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 31.62 meters; Storer finished sixth (31.19 meters).

In the day's first Decathlon event, Hernandez posted a winning time of 15.89 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, followed by Sulonen (16.30), Neil Macrorie of Cal Poly Pomona (16.40) and Belue (16.41).
Uebelhardt, who began Friday in fifth place following Thursday's five Decathlon events, finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.70. Storer came in ninth at 19.05.
