WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Chico State softball standout Gwen Cox put up the best numbers of her Wildcat career during the just-completed 2009 campaign, and for her efforts the senior centerfielder has received some well-deserved postseason recognition. The California Collegiate Athletic Association announced that Cox has been selected to the CCAA All-Conference second team.
Cox was the lone Chico State softball player to earn All-CCAA honors, determined by a vote of conference coaches. Gwen led the Wildcats in nearly every offensive category in 2009, setting personal single-season bests with a .306 batting average, 23 runs scored, 55 hits, 14 doubles, two triples and 17 RBI. Her team-high 27 stolen bases were the second-most among CCAA players and set a new Chico State single-season record. Cox finished her career with 39 steals, placing her in fifth place on the Wildcats’ all-time stolen base list.
Humboldt State first baseman Natalie Galletly, who led the conference with a .471 batting average, was named the CCAA’s Most Valuable Player, with Sonoma State’s Lindsay Emmel chosen as the conference’s Pitcher of the Year. Other conference honors went to Emily McEwen of Cal State Dominguez Hills (Freshman of the Year), UC San Diego’s Kristyn Lesovsky (Newcomer of the Year) and Humboldt State’s Frank Cheek (Coach of the Year).
