Men’s soccer team can’t rebound from early goal in 1-0 loss

TURLOCK – The Chico State men’s soccer team outshot host Cal State Stanislaus 23-11 and allowed only two shots on goal over the final 88:56 of Saturday night’s match at Cal State Stanislaus. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the goal they allowed just 1:04 into the match was the only one of the evening in a 1-0 loss.

Edgar Santana’s sailing shot sailed over the head of Wildcats goalkeeper Michael Keohane and into the net for what proved to be the game-winner seemingly before the teams got a chance to settle into a rhythm. After that, the Wildcats cracked eight shots no goal, each of which was saved by Warriors’ goalkeeper Javier Rosales, and also came up empty on seven corner kick opportunities.

Chico State fell to 7-4-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the loss. Cal State Stanislaus, which avenged a 2-0 defeat at Chico State on Sept. 16, improved to 7-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the CCAA.

Cal State Stanislaus undoubtedly benefited from an announced crowd of 1,171 on “Break the Record Night” at the Warriors’ brand new soccer facility.

Chico State is back in action on the road next weekend for key showdowns at Cal State San Bernardino (Friday at 3 p.m.) and Cal Poly Pomona (Sunday at 2 p.m.).
