’Cats looking to reclaim title of “Best in the West”

National No. 4 Wildcats among six top-25 teams in regional championship field

The Chico State men's cross country team has enjoyed one of the most dominating seasons in the history of the program to this point, beating every opponent in its path this season (including a number of Division I programs) handily and winning its 15th consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in the West, have placed at least five runners inside the top 10 in each of their four races this season. Will Reyes has three individual wins and one runner-up finish. Connor Fisher and Kyle Medina have placed in the top 10 in all four races. And Falco DiGiallonardo and Steven Martinez have been in the top 10 three times.

In short, the Wildcats have been having quite a bit of fun.

Beginning with Saturday's West Region Championships at Amend Park in Billings, Montana, the stakes get even higher.

On the line for the Wildcats is their string of 17 consecutive NCAA Championship berths. The top five teams at the regional championships will advance to the NCAA Championships in St. Leo, Florida, on Nov. 19. The Wildcats are also hoping to avenge their loss to Alaska Anchorage at last season's race for the title of Best in the West.

The History
Chico State has won 11 regional titles in the last 14 years. They finished second to Alaska Anchorage last season at Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth, Oregon, marking their 16th-straight top-two finish.

Three different Wildcats have won the individual regional title: Isaach Chavez (2013), Scott Bauhs (2008), and Patrick Boivin (2005).

The Returners
Seniors Reyes and Steven Martinez were the top finishers for the Wildcats last season, coming in third and 10th, respectively.
