Chico State men's basketball's 2013 recruiting class.

Men's Basketball By Luke Reid - Sports Information Director (lreid@csuchico.edu)

Signings point to success on this highway

Three freshmen, one transfer joining men’s basketball program

The only folks who might be more excited than Chico State basketball fans about the Wildcats’ aggressive recruiting style under Head Coach Greg Clink are the gas station and mini mart owners along the Highway 99 corridor frequented by the coaching staff.

Clink recently announced another robust recruiting class comprised of four players found between the Capital and The Grapevine: 6-foot-5 combo guard Corey Silverstrom of Bullard High School (Clovis), 6-foot-7 forward Isaiah Ellis of the Sacramento area’s Antelope High School, Bakersfield Christian product Tyler Harris (who spent last season at the Air Force Academy), and Sacramento State transfer Jordan Estrada.

"They're all really good guys, first and foremost. We've done another good job of recruiting good guys that want to be part of a winning program," Clink told Travis Souders of the Chico Enterprise-Record. "They are all excited to be at Chico State, all going to all be very coachable and they all want to win. They'll mesh well with who we have returning."

(Look for links to Souders' story, along with more suggested links, at the end of this story.)

Chico State is coming off consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament trips, but Clink is not interested in resting on those laurels. These four signings are proof.

Silverstrom, the Fresno Bee Co-Player of the Year, is a Cal-Hi Sports Division I First Team All-State selection after leading Bullard to three consecutive Valley Championship titles. He is also on the All-State Elite Squad's third team, a list of the top 30 players in the state. Local basketball fans may remember Silverstrom (and Ellis) from his MVP performance at the 2012 Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament.

According to the Fresno Bee, Silverstrom, since being elevated to varsity for the playoffs as a sophomore, averaged a team-high 15.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.7 deflections. He delivered the team's two biggest shots of the season – consecutive 3s that snapped a 48-48 tie early in the fourth quarter in a 66-53 win over Clovis West in the D-I championship.

A highlight of one of those shots, and the entire video from that game, can be found below.

“I cannot wait to coach Corey,” said Clink. “He had an outstanding career at Bullard High School playing for a great coach in Tony Amundsen. He’s a dynamic scorer and he’s going to have a great career here as a Chico State Wildcat.”

Silverstrom told the Chico Enterprise-Record that his choice was a “no-brainer.”

“They showed me the most interest, that they really wanted me, and their coaching staff is great," Silverstrom said. "The guys on the team were amazing on my visit and treated me right. I couldn't find a single negative..."

Ellis, the Capital Athletic League MVP, was a key three-year player and defensive force for Antelope, helping the Titans to win back-to-back Sac-Joaquin Section Division II titles after reaching the section title game during his sophomore season.

A Sacramento Bee All-Metro second team selection, Ellis averaged 12.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks and two steals before breaking his foot in the Titans' 70-63 D-II title win over Grant.

“Isaiah had a big time high school career at Antelope High School and we look forward to him doing some special things here at Chico State,” said Clink. “His size, athleticism and skill set give him the potential to be a great player in the CCAA.”

Ellis also drew interest from Illinois, Minnesota and Santa Clara, among other schools, according to NorCal Preps, which rated him 22nd on their prospect list. Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee tweeted that the Wildcats’ signing of Ellis is “the recruiting steal of the year.”

Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard, spent four varsity years at Bakersfield Christian before signing to Air Force Prep, and in that time, he became the school's all-time leading scorer, averaging 23.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, and a trio of assists and steals per game as a senior. Harris earned ESPN Division IV All-State "Next 10" honors, along with National Christian School First Team All-American accolades.

“Tyler is an outstanding player with a great skill set,” said Clink. “We believe Tyler has the ability to play multiple positions and we are really excited about him becoming a Wildcat.”

Estrada, a 6-foot-0 combo guard, prepped at De La Salle (Concord) and graduated one year head of another current Wildcat, Nate Appel. He spent two seasons at Diablo Valley College and last year at Sacramento State, so he has just one season of eligibility remaining.

He played in 22 games for Sacramento State last season (starting eight) and averaged 2.9 points and 1.1 assists per game. He also boasted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.2-to-1.

“Jordan gives us a lot of experience on the perimeter. He had an outstanding high school and college career thus far and we are expecting more good things from him when he puts on a Wildcat uniform,” said Clink. “His toughness and leadership skills are terrific and I really look forward to coaching him.”

Estrada shot 41-percent from beyond the arc in leading Diablo Valley College to the Big-8 title as a sophomore. He averaged 132 points per game and earned First Team All-Big 8 honors.

HERE is a short video of Estrada knocking down a game winner as a freshman at Diablo Valley in 2010.
