GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chico State men’s golfer Kyle Souza delivered a 1-over par 72 Tuesday in the second round of stroke play, and his 36-hole total of 4-over 146 appeared to be good enough to finish in the top 64 and advance in the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. But thanks to an afternoon lightning storm that halted play with 18 golfers still on the course, Souza will have to wait until Wednesday to find out if he moves on to match play or is one of nearly 100 golfers who are eliminated from competition.
Souza, who shot a 3-over par 74 Monday on the 7,218-yard Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C., teed off at 8:20 a.m. Eastern time and began the round on a hot streak, collecting birdies on the second, fourth and sixth holes and was 2-under through eight. Souza staggered briefly with three straight bogeys on holes nine, 10 and 11, but recovered to play even par the rest of the way, adding another birdie on 12.
Souza then waited several hours to see if he would advance to the field of 64 – but due to what tournament officials termed “a dangerous situation,” the lightning storm that hit the Greensboro area halted the day’s proceedings with Souza in a 13-way tie for 48th place. The 18 golfers that need to finish their second round of stroke play will resume at 7 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, with a playoff to follow, if necessary.
Only 12 players were under par in stroke play before the tournament suspension. Georgia Tech’s John-Tyler Griffin took top honors with a 36-hole total of 9-under 133.
