CHICO – The 2010 season may be over, but the awards continue to roll in for three members of the Chico State women’s track and field team…this time for their success in the classroom. The College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) has announced that Wildcat distance runner Kara Lubieniecki has been named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team, while teammates Anna Eicholtz and Alia Gray were honored with All-District second team selections.
Lubieniecki, a junior majoring in kinesiology, adds the ESPN The Magazine award to her previous California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors. Lubieniecki capped off a successful 2010 season with a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run at last month’s NCAA Track & Field Championships, earning All-American status.
Lubieniecki is now eligible for Academic All-American honors, which will be determined from among several candidates nationwide later this month.
Gray, a kinesiology major wrapping up her sophomore year, is also a prior winner of CCAA and USTFCCCA All-Academic awards. Though injuries prevented her from running in the NCAA Championships, Gray earned an automatic bid to the national competition with a 35:29.51 time in the 10,000-meter run March 26 at the Stanford Invitational.
Eicholtz, a junior majoring in biology, is a multiple CCAA All-Academic selection. The high points of Eicholtz’s 2010 season were second place finishes in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs May 8 during the CCAA Championships in San Diego. Her time of 4:38.22 in the 1,500 is the eighth fastest in Chico State history.
