CHICO – Getting it done in competition and in the classroom – the ultimate achievement of a student-athlete. Chico State’s Ryan Bertucci has certainly ascended to that lofty goal in 2010 – less than a week after earning All-American honors in the high jump at the NCAA Championships, the senior from Gardnerville, Nev. has been named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team, the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
Bertucci, an Animal Science major, was one of 11 athletes named to the District 8 All-Academic First Team. He is now eligible for Academic All-American honors, which will be determined from among several candidates nationwide later this month.
His eighth place finish last Saturday during the NCAA Championship’s final day netted Bertucci his second All-American award as a Wildcat. Thursday’s ESPN award is also Bertucci’s second academic honor is as many years – he was a member of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team in 2009.
