Wildcats finish second in CCAA Commissioner’s Cup standings

The Chico State athletic department finished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioner’s Cup standings announced Thursday. The Wildcats won a conference-best four titles – in men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track and field – and finished with 20 points, just one more than UC San Diego.

It was the closest finish in the five-year history of the program. The previous closest came following the 2007-08 season when the Tritons edged the Wildcats by 2.5 points. The Tritons and Wildcats have finished 1-2 in the Cup standings in three of the past four years.

Chico State finished third in the final women’s basketball standings, fourth in baseball, softball, and women’s soccer, and fifth in men’s golf and men’s basketball.

Nine of Chico State’s 13 programs reached the NCAA Championships, the volleyball team was left out of the NCAA’s despite a sparkling 23-9 record, and the up-and-coming men’s basketball team advanced to the CCAA Championship Tournament semifinals.

The Wildcats’ men’s golf team finished third in the nation, the women’s cross country team finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, the men’s cross country and men’s track & field programs finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, the softball team advanced to the Sweet 16, and the women’s soccer team earned its first ever NCAA Championship Tournament victory.

But NCAA Championships do not play a role in determining the Commissioner’s Cup winner.

UC San Diego captured CCAA titles in baseball, women’s basketball and women’s tennis, and finished second in women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, and tied for second in women’s soccer.

Cal Poly Pomona finished third with 25.5 points and was followed by Cal State San Bernardino (31), Cal State L.A. (34.5), Cal State Dominguez Hills (35.5), Sonoma State (38), Cal State Stanislaus (39.5), Humboldt State (41.5), San Francisco State (49.5), Cal State Monterey Bay (52.5) and Cal State East Bay (81).

An institution’s Commissioner’s Cup ranking is calculated using its top two league finishes in the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, as well as the highest two remaining finishes, regardless of season. An institution’s numerical finish for team sports is determined by regular season standings, and individual sports finishes are determined by the finishes of the season-ending championship event.

Team sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball. Individual sports are cross country, men’s golf and track & field. Institutions winning the conference tournament in the sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and baseball deduct one (1) point from their regular season finish in those respective sports.

The Commissioner’s Cup is presented in association with Apple Computer and is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight (8) of the CCAA’s 13 championship sport offerings. The winning institution receives a laptop computer and glass trophy.
