Fulfer finishes fourth in Decathlon, earns All America honors in NCAA Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Talor Fulfer capped off an outstanding 2010 season with a strong showing Friday in the NCAA Track and Field Championships, placing high in four of the final five Decathlon events to collect 6,794 points and a fourth place overall finish to earn All America honors at Johnson C. Smith University’s Irwin Belk Track Complex in Charlotte, N.C. Then the thunderstorms came, postponing all of Friday's action aside from the multi events.

Fulfer, who started Friday ranked seventh in the 12-man Decathlon field, rebounded from an 11th place showing in the 110-meter hurdles (16.31 seconds) to finish fifth in the discus throw (123-feet-07), tie for fourth with Wildcat teammate Jake Nelson in the pole vault (13-feet-11.25) and third in the javelin throw (190-feet-11). In the final Decathlon event, Fulfer ran the 1,500-meter run in 5:02.84, good for a seventh place finish and insuring the junior from Beiber one of the top eight spots and earn All America honors.

Nelson and J. Patrick Smith also competed in the Decathlon, with Smith finishing just out of the money in ninth place with 6,305 points; Nelson, despite season best performances in the discus throw (135-feet-02) and pole vault (13-feet-11.25), came in 12th place overall with 6,036 points.

Kelly Clancey, the Wildcats’ lone participant in the Heptathlon, came up short in her quest for All America honors. Clancey wrapped up the seven event competition Friday with a ninth place finish in the 800-meter run (2:22.13), 10th in the long jump (17-feet-11.75) and 14th in the javelin throw (87-feet-11). Clancey placed 15th overall with a total of 4,787 points.

Several other Wildcats were scheduled to be in action Friday afternoon as the second day of the NCAA Championships continued. Katrina Rodriguez was to compete in the pole vault, Ryan Bertucci in the high jump, and Michael Wickman, Tori Tyler, Jimmy Elam, and Brent Handa in distance events.
