GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Competing in a talented 17-team field that includes nine Top 25 nationally-ranked schools, the Chico State women’s golf team combined to shoot a solid 42-over par 330 in Monday’s opening round of the Grand Canyon Invitational, and though the Wildcats finished the day in a tie for 12th place, they are just six shots out of sixth place entering Tuesday’s final round at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
Erin Sears, who has been Chico State’s most consistent golfer for well over a month, led the Wildcats in Monday’s opening round, firing a 7-over par 79 to grab a share of 15th place on the individual leaderboard. Megan Chang finished the first round tied for 36th place with a 10-over par 82.
Shelby Hooper carded a 12-over par 84 Monday and enters second round action in the Grand Canyon Invitational tied for 45th place. Alexandra Bush owns a share of 52nd place with an opening round score of 13-over 85, while Wildcat teammate Katie Canadas is tied for 70th following a 19-over par 91 Monday.
Tarleton State, the No. 5 ranked team in Division II, shot a collective 10-over par 298 in first round play, leading second place Sonoma State by 16 strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round. The tournament’s host school, Grand Canyon University, is third at 28-over par 316, while the Grand Canyon Invitational’s defending champ, Cal State Monterey Bay, is tied for fourth place with an 18-hole total of 33-over par 321. Carla Cooper of Tarleton State tops the individual scoreboard thanks to a 6-under par 66 on Monday.
